safe^ND 2027 will take place in Berlin from 6 to 8 October 2027. The featured topic of the upcoming conference is:

“Better together: cooperation and knowledge sharing across borders”

The disposal of radioactive waste is a complex sociotechnical problem that requires decades of comprehensive research and development, followed by implementation. Currently, many countries are working in parallel to address these challenges. International cooperation is an essential aspect of this field, providing opportunities to leverage synergies and achieve the safe and efficient disposal of radioactive waste. It is particularly crucial for countries with small inventories of radioactive waste to benefit from the established disposal programmes of countries with larger inventories. safe^ND 2027 will highlight these cooperative efforts by dedicating sessions to ongoing international research collaborations and networks, as well as to the current status of disposal programmes in a selection of advanced national programmes.

Furthermore, Master’s and PhD graduates (including graduates with German “Diplom” or “Magister” degrees) who successfully completed their thesis within the 30 months preceding safe^ND 2027 (i.e. those who defended their thesis after 30 April 2025) can apply for the BASE Young Scientist Award 2027 from 31 August 2026 to 31 January 2027.
