The session is proposed to discuss the geodynamic evolution of the Caribbean realm integrating geological, structural, petrological, geochronological and geophysical data. Most workers agree on the exotic (i.e., Pacific origin) nature of the Caribbean plate, currently conceptualized within general geodynamic models for the region, but no general consensus exists on basic issues such as the number and size of volcanic arcs that existed at the plate margins since the Mesozoic, their relation to one or several subduction zones, the polarity of subduction, the timing of arc formation, accretion and collision, the origin of pre-Cretaceous terranes, the lithospheric structure as revealed by geophysical data, the origin of the Caribbean plateau, etc. Much of the disagreement arises from conclusions extracted after detailed studies carried out at different scales all through the plate interior and margins, which in any case demonstrate the complex regional evolution of this plate. We invite contributions presenting new data and/or ideas/models concerning the composition, structure and evolution of the Caribbean realm. We particularly welcome contributions that focus on the link (at any scale) between the different geoscience disciplines and the dynamic processes plate evolution.
