The aim of this open session is to bring together the community of researchers working in the field of modelling the atmospheric transport and transformation on global, regional and local scales, as well as the accidental releases of various hazardous species.
The focus of the session is ongoing work, new results and current problems. All presentations covering the research area of air pollution modelling are welcome, including recent model developments, applications and evaluations, physical and chemical parameterisations, model testing and validation, numerical methods, model systems and integration, forecasting, event-studies, scenarios, assessment, etc.
It has now been 20 years since the Chernobyl accident occurred. During these 20 years, emergency dispersion models have been further developed and are presently much more comprehensive. The question is whether the model performances also have improved significantly? This part of the session is dedicated to discussion of the state-of-the-art and current problems in atmospheric dispersion modelling in application to accidental releases. Experience from the Chernobyl catastrophe 20 years ago, as well as more recent model experiments and real case studies, revealed serious difficulties in predicting the transport under complicated meteorological conditions. Contributions describing the current quality of emergency dispersion models, their interactions with NWP drivers, use and abuse of ensemble and probabilistic forecasting are welcome.
This session contributes to and is supported by ACCENT T&TP - Transport and Transformation of Pollutants.
