Information - SSP12 Environmental Micropalaeontology - Monitoring past and present environmental perturbations using micro-organisms/fossils (co-listed in BG & CL)
Event Information
Micro- organisms can be found in fresh water and in the sea at all latitudes. Recent studies have demonstrated these oragnsims have a great potential to solve environmental problems. In particular, past and present environmental changes can be detected, and monitored using micro-organisms.
Main purpose of this session is to bring together experts in micropaleontology to (1) present their research focused on the potential of microrganisms to reconstruct paleoenvironments and to (2) discuss some aspects not generally associated with traditional micropalaeontology such as the use of micro-organisms as indicators of present and past naturally stressed environments (e.g., anoxic, hyper/hypo -saline, highly fertile) and to assess human-induced perturbations (e.g., pollution).
