This Session will be focusing on the most recent findings and state of the art methodology: strategies, analytical techniques, geo-statistical mapping, etc, associated with the subject of soil trace elements. Special attention will be paid to the area of pedo-geochemical mapping (interpolation, fractals, etc) due to its importance in assessing natural variability and also detect areas affected by possible anthropogenic pollution.
The maintenance of soil quality is a prior condition for sustainable agriculture and a healthy geo eco-system. Trace element research in soils is an essential subject when trying to understand the actual situation of terrestrial environments, possible pollutions, imbalances: deficiencies and toxicities. In order to understand changes in global climate and the evolution of biodiversity it is important to monitor the fate and origin of trace elements, including radio nuclides in soils. Other important topics to be discussed include bioavailability, plant soil interactions, etc, as well as the possible negative repercussions created by deficiencies and toxicities, in the food chain, for human and animal health.
The definition and determination of reference values (generic, global , regional and local natural values, background, baseline, trigger and threshold values, "standard intervention values", etc, etc.) is an area of particular interest given the abundance of similar and sometimes overlapping terms used for description purposes. By mentioning this we hope to increase awareness and avoid possible serious scientific, administrative and legal misinterpretations.
