Information - BG1.09/SSS26 Biomineralization and bioweathering (co-organized by SSS)
Event Information
Much progress has still to be made to evidence and quantify microbial processes in the geosphere and their effects on minerals and in particular to differentiate biotic from abiotic processes. This requires a better understanding of the biochemical and geochemical mechanisms involved in the interactions between microbes and minerals during biomineralization and/or weathering. Major advances in both material sciences and biology in the last years herald a significant improvement in the characterization of the actors and the products of biomineralization and bioweathering reactions.
The aim of this session is to present the latest results on biomineralization and bioweathering processes, through both field and experimental studies. We solicit contributions that characterize properties of biominerals, discuss potential biosignatures, study molecular-scale processes at organic/mineral interfaces, present new methodological advances for the study of geomicrobiological systems, or offer plain evidence of the microbiological impact on mineral transformations.
