  Information - HS46 Erosion, sediment transport and deposition – process assessment and mitigation (co-listed in GM & NH)

Event Information
Erosion, transport and deposition of sediment cause severe damage in mountain areas every year. To limit such damage, mitigation measures have been established in and around many mountain torrents and rivers. The dimensions of such measures depend on an appropriate assessment of the existing sediment hazards. The assessment is typically carried out based on experience from past events and on the results of relatively simple empirical models. In parallel new and challenging insights into erosion, transport and deposition processes are being acquired by many scientists all around the world. Often, little of this knowledge finds its way into the assessment of actual sediment problems. On the one hand this session shall attract experts with experience in the application of simple approaches, showing possible limitations and requirements for improved methods. On the other hand recent and ongoing research on sediment processes shall be presented, describing also its potential for application in hazard assessment and design of mitigation measures. In this way the session will help to bridge the gap between state of the art process knowledge and methods frequently applied in hazard assessment.
