Information - BG1.11 CARBOEUROPE: Approaches to assess regional terrestrial carbon budgets
Event Information
In the last few years a growing interest raised in understanding and quantifying the carbon budget of regions and continents. There are today different approaches to address the estimation of carbon budgets. They mainly differ if they are based on direct observation or models and if they are top-down or bottom -up based. The purpose of the session is to review the current status of the methodologies and to present recent updates on regional terrestrial carbon budgets, their sectorial analysis (by ecosystem type, anthropogenic versus natural carbon fluxes etc.), spatial and temporal variability. We encourage contributions on individual sectors, e.g. forests, croplands, grassland, peatlands, lateral carbon transport, as well as comprehensive studies and atmospheric observations and inversions. Presentations on advances in methodologies for transition of spatial scales and multiple constraint approaches are highly welcome. The session is co-sponsored by the CarboEurope-IP Integrated Project (www.carboeurope.org) and the North American Carbon Programme (http://www.isse.ucar.edu/nacp/).
