Information - HS18 Interactions between the carbon and hydrological cycle and the climate system (co-listed in AS, BG & CL)
Event Information
It is increasingly clear that important feedbacks exist between the carbon and the hydrological cycle and that these may have significant impacts on the regional and global climate systems. These feedbacks operate at both long and short time scales and at local to global spatial scales. Predictions of the sensitivity of decomposition rates to temperature changes appear to have global impacts on the carbon cycle. At local scales carbon releases through respiration are sensitive to water shortages in Mediterranean ecosystems. At continental scale, droughts impact the occurrence of fires and their subsequent pulses of carbon to the atmosphere. At short time scales, the 2003 drought in Europe appear to have impacted both carbon exchange and water fluxes at regional scales. An improved understanding of how the cycles of water and carbon interact is crucial for future climate predictions.
This symposium aims to bring together a wide range of studies that address the relation between the water and carbon cycle at a scales ranging from plot level, through catchment and regional to global scales. Both modeling and observational studies are solicited.
The symposium can be jointly organized by the Hydrology, Biogeosciences and Climate sections of EGU.
