  Information - G11/GD17 New prospects in plate kinematics modeling by geodetic and tectonic inferences (co-organized by GD) (co-listed in NH & TS)

Event Information
The session aims to solicit an interaction between researchers from Geodesy, Geodynamics and Tectonics working on plate kinematics modeling and the dynamics of plate motions.
The wide use of space geodesy techniques devoted to geophysical and geodynamical purposes has recently evidenced both the advances and the limitations due to the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF)definition. Current TRFs are defined under hypotheses suited to overcome the rank deficiency of the observations with respect to the parameters that have to be estimated (coordinates and velocities). From a geodetic point of view, one possibility implies the application of the no-net-rotation condition (NNR), able to ensure the TRF time evolution, or its co-rotation with the Earth surface.
The application of this condition allows the accurate estimation of relative plate motions, but on the other hand, from a geodynamic point of view, it limits the comprehension of the real Earth's behavior where a net "W-ward" rotation of the lithosphere is observed in the hotspots reference frame (HSRF), as suggested by independent tectonic global asymmetries like subduction and rift zones.
We welcome discussions and invite authors to send their abstracts on plate kinematic modeling based on space geodesy analysis and the advances or limitations of different reference frames applications; rotational and tidal models, models on the lithosphere-mantle relation, mantle dynamics; present and past reconstructions of plate movements, tectonic asymmetries, structural constraints for global models.
