The advent of satellite altimetry has provided unprecedented opportunities and capabilities for monitoring, studying, and forecasting the ocean's physical environment. The synergies of satellite altimetry with hydrography, modelling and the recent gravity field results from the GRACE mission are even more enormous.
This session, co-organized by Ocean Science and Geodesy, provides a forum for interdisciplinary discussions of the striking achievements and distinct impacts of satellite altimetry on the oceanography and the latest advances in all aspects of oceanographic applications of satellite altimetry. Topics include, but are not limited to basin-, shelf- and eddy-scale sea level and current variability at various time scales, and impacts of gravity field modelling. Contributions reporting on combination of altimetric data with dynamic ocean models, hydrographic observations and other remote-sensing data, on assimilation of altimetric data into ocean circulation models, on applications in coastal and inland seas, and on interannual and decadal scale variability from multi-mission altimetry data are particularly encouraged. Presentations about applications of altimetry data for interdisciplinary studies such as geodesy, biology, fisheries, and carbon cycle are also welcome.
