Information - NP3.07 Scaling, scale and nonlinearity in Solid Earth (co-listed in GMPV, NH, SSS & TS)

Event Information
In the broad area of soil science, geology and geophysics, the practical appeal of non-linear dynamics, hierarchical distributions and fractals is that the physics and mathematics involved appear to provide a robust and natural approach for dealing with non-linear processes which characterize natural systems. The session will encourage the development of a highly interdisciplinary perspective expanding visions concerning variability and heterogeneity that could be applied on these subjects in geosciences. Contributions involving wavelets, fractal or multifractal analyses, self-organized critical phenomena, scaling models and forecasting are welcome. Graduate students should come away with an enhanced appreciation for both the simplicity and complexity of non-linear dynamical processes and a perception of the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the structure and dynamics of intrinsic and extrinsic processes. A selection of the papers presented at this session will be published in a special issue of one of the top journals.
