Event Information
Earth’s weather and climate is without doubt a function of our location in the solar system, the behavior of the Sun and the nature of Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. However, solar radiation (X-rays and UV), energetic charged particles (magnetospheric particles, solar protons and galactic cosmic rays) and waves (gravity, electric fields, ...) are all mechanisms which could be responsible for causing changes in the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere, mesosphere and stratosphere due to changing conditions on the Sun, in interplanetary space, in the magnetosphere and in the troposphere. This session concerns solar wind and energetic charged particle effects on the atmosphere, as well as effects of lightning on the middle atmosphere (Schumann resonances, ULF phenomena, sprites, jets, etc.). Modifications include changes to the chemistry of the troposphere and stratosphere, as well as to cloud nucleation, cloud microphysics, the distribution of aerosols and clouds, rainfall, etc. and the role of atmospheric electrodynamics and effects of the global electric circuit on the atmosphere. Inter- disciplinary contributions regarding the above in the context of both short-term and long-term variability are especially welcome.
