Information - TS7.8 Accretionary orogens and crustal growth: facts, fiction, fantasy (co-listed in GD)
Event Information
Models for the formation of continental lithosphere range from those invoking production of most of the present day-volume very early in Earth history to those which propose the steady state producton of lithosphere in accretionary orogens which evolve along long-lived active continental margins. However, subduction erosion also occurs at these margins and contributes significantly to crustal destruction and recycling. This session is aimed at assessing and constraining rates of formation, preservation and recycling of continental lithosphere through time, using geological, geochemical and geophysical evidence.as well as geodynamic modelling
