Information - CL009 Mid-latitude cyclones: processes, variability, changes and impacts (co-listed in AS)
Extra-tropical cyclones strongly influence weather and climate in mid-latitudes and any future changes due to global warming may have large impacts on the local scale. This session will include studies of the variability and changes in mid-latitude cyclones and polar lows in observations, re-analysis data and data from models (NWP, global and regional climate models and idealised models, such as aqua-planets). Storms can be analysed using Eulerian based storm-track diagnostics or with Lagrangian methods that locate individual cyclones and follow their tracks and these cyclones can be classified using a variety of methods. Studies on the effects of model physics, domain resolution and boundary data on the simulation of storms are welcome as are mechanistic studies into the sensitivity to the SSTs and other surface influences. Studies into the relationship between the variability of mid-latitude storms and modes of large-scale circulation such as the NAO, PNA and ENSO are also solicited. Finally studies on the impacts of changes in storms and extreme storms on gusts, rain, flooding as well as on impact sectors such as agriculture, forestry, insurance and wind energy are welcome.
