Information - SSP27 The Messinian desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea, its causes, phenomena and consequences (co-listed in CL & TS)
Event Information
The aim of the session is to conduct a comprehensive discussion on the Messinian
evaporites in the Mediterranean Sea. We will welcome contributions that discuss
the various aspects of this major paleo-environmental event, such as:
* The paleogeographic causes that led to the desiccation of the Mediterranean at
the latest Miocene, and the tectonic processes that controlled them.
* The paleooceanographic regime that enabled the abrupt deposition of a very
thick layer of evaporites during the Messinian Stage, and relevant
contemporaneous paleoclimatic phenomena.
* The effect of the desiccation on the rate of fluvial erosion during the
Messinian.
* The penetration of brackish water from ParaTethys into the desiccated
Mediterranean, and the Lago-Mare sedimentological signature.
* The tectonic processes that controlled the early Pliocene refloosding of the
Mediterranean Sea.
* Salt and mud diapirs in the Mediterranean, major slumping events, and other
Plio-Quaternary post-depositional phenomena.
