Information - G7 Monitoring of the troposphere and ionosphere by space geodetic techniques (co-listed in AS)

Event Information
In recent time it has been shown that space geodetic techniques such as GPS (both ground and LEO based), VLBI, DORIS, satellite altimetry, and the gravity missions Champ/Grace can give valuable atmospheric information: about both, the lower neutral atmosphere (troposphere and stratosphere), and the ionosphere (usually expressed by TEC, total electron content numbers). The potential for atmospheric sensing with these techniques has improved considerably over the last few years as a result of technological advances and developments of appropriate models and algorithms. Abstracts are sought which present the results and the accuracy of tropospheric, stratospheric and ionospheric information, and theoretical studies are
encouraged that assess the requirements for the accuracy of the relevant parameters e.g., mapping functions, gradients, and others. We are now at an exciting threshold at which accurate atmospheric estimates and retrievals from these techniques may significantly improve our understanding of the physical and dynamic behaviour of weather and climate, and space weather at various scales. The markedly different spatial and temporal capabilities of the space-geodetic methods for sensing the atmosphere also pose great challenges to validation studies. Thus, comparisons with other measurements e.g., by WVR or radiosondes for the neutral atmosphere or ionosondes for the ionosphere, and also comparisons of the results obtained by different space geodetic techniques, are of great interest. Presentations with respect to IAG project GGOS (Global Geodetic Observing System) dealing with the integration and combination of various techniques are highly appreciated.
