  Information - AW10 Tropopause Dynamics

Event Information
The upper troposphere and lower stratosphere is a key region where
significant changes are taking place that have the potential to perturb the
Earth's climate. This session deals with the "tropopause region". The
tropopause has been the subject of increasing scientific interest, due to its
being the transition layer between the troposphere and the stratosphere. Its
complex structure is determined by its location on top of the mainly
convectively driven troposphere and at the bottom of the predominately
radiatively controlled stratosphere. Among the subjects of interest of this
session are specially welcome a) the characterization of the structure and
features of the tropopause from modelling and from analysis using different
kind of data, (radiosondes, reanalysis, radio-occultations…), b) the occurrence
and characterization of multiple tropopauses, c) the role of this layer in the
stratosphere-troposphere exchange of water, mass and chemical compounds, d)
the possible role of the temporal variation of its height (or pressure) as a
fingerprint for natural and anthropogenic climate change.
Any other study concerning meteorological, climatic or chemical aspects of the
tropopause is also welcome.
