Information - HS35 Space-time interpolation and analysis methods in catchment and groundwater hydrology (co-listed in NH)
Event Information
Estimation of the spatial variability of hydrological characteristics remains one of the fundamental challenges in hydrology. For this session we solicit contributions that explore the spatial distribution and spatio-temporal distribution of hydrologic variables in a statistical (geostatistical) context. The session will focus on the methods for analyses of hydrological spatial (and space-time) data and interpolation. The two most widely used approaches for analysis are second moment characterization (mean values, variances and covariances alt. semivariograms) and Karhunen-Love expansion., i.e. series representation in terms of random variables and deterministic functions of a random process. The deterministic functions can either be postulated as, for example, in harmonic analysis and analysis by means of wavelets or determined from the data itself, as in analysis by means of empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) or Principal Component analysis (PCA). As similar methods are used in catchment hydrology and subsurface hydrology the synergies of relevant work in these two subdisciplines is of particular interest. Application examples solicited include:
- Representation of variability in a GIS modelling environment,
- External drifts from landscape features, the topology of rivers as well as scaling in data.
- Studies across a range of scale, from forested headwater catchments to larger mixed-use catchments are appropriate for this session,
- Spatiotemporal prediction of groundwater pollution and network optimisation in aquifers
- Use of stochastic models along with deterministic numerical models (e.g. to limit the extent of a pollutant transport model to quantify the impact of a land use change).
