Information - AC01 Climate prediction and climate variability
Event Information
This session focuses on climate variability on timescales ranging from months out to decades. It invites studies on mechanisms, analysis and impacts of climate variability as well as on short term climate prediction. A key challenge is to produce practical seasonal to decadal forecasts. This requires the use of coupled atmosphere/ocean/land surface models, although statistically based schemes have also had success in the past. Operational prediction schemes are now being developed or in place at a number of centres. The use of ensemble techniques to provide estimates of the probability distribution of predictions and improved skill is becoming commonplace.
Papers on practical applications, including downscaled information, analysis and verification aspects or operational implementations are particularly welcomed.
