  Information - HS4 Incorporating hydrological processes knowledge into catchment modelling

Event Information
The session focuses on the examination and discussion of recent advances in the modelling of hydrological processes at scales ranging from the small headwater scale to meso-scale catchments (~ 1.000 kmē). Understanding hydrological processes through modelling requires a pragmatic approach, in which the modeller will always be both data limited in evaluating proposed models and where model concepts are developed using 'imperfect knowledge' about many of the local, field and catchment scale process descriptions. Whatever the complexity of the modelling structure, which clearly relates to the modelling objectives and for the model to be 'fit for purpose', a modeller should critically assess their results. This assessment should include the level of representation the model contains and the uncertainties associated with model parameters and model process descriptions.
The scope of the session is to provide a review of ongoing research in the fields listed above and particularly (but not limited to):
(i) process representation in models,
(ii) incorporation of novel techniques into the assessment of 'process orientated' hydrological models,
(iii) analysis of model application and results, and
(iv) regionalisation of hydrological model parameters.
Of particular interest are investigations focusing on the relation between catchment properties, hydrological processes and model parameters/concepts as well as research devoted to practical 'real world' applications of newly introduced modelling concepts. We would finally appreciate contributions which explicitly address the difficulty in assessing competing process descriptions in models using a hypothesis testing framework where consideration is given to whether the dominant modes of behaviour of the real world system can be appropriately identified. Both oral presentations and poster contributions addressing one or more of the above mentioned issues are solicited.
