Information - US7 The International Polar Year 2007-2008 (abstract submission by invitation only)

Event Information
The International Polar Year 2007-2008 launched on March 1, 2007 is the largest multidisciplinary programme of its kind since the International Geophysical Year in 1957-58 and involves researchers from over 60 nations. Its objective is to increase awareness of the significance of the Polar Regions, both to the Earth System and as early warning sentinels of changing climate. This latest Polar Year will involve a substantial pulse of research activity during the field period 2007-2009 but it is hoped that it will also emulate the achievement of the IGY in stimulating a step change increase in polar research activities. Over 200 major international projects are featured in the IPY programme of activities including many geophysical projects. Topics in the session will, where possible, include a strong emphasis on climate related "tipping points" such as stability of polar ice sheets and the role of both polar oceans. Other major areas of IPY science to be showcased are the significance of the extensive subglacial hydrology recently identified beneath the Antarctic ice sheet and the application of marine/ice core records to studying climate change and geological events through Earth history. The talks in this session will provide a broad overview of IPY science and a link to other IPY-related sessions at EGU 2007.

Preliminary List of Solicited Speakers
