Information - MPRG10/SM9 Physics and Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting (co-organized by MPRG)

Event Information
This session focuses on fundamental physical and mechanical processes
involved during earthquakes and faulting. Papers on all aspects of
processes related to fault mechanics are welcome, including
simulations and observations of fault growth process; fault
heterogeneities characterization (geometry, displacement and stress
fields), development and feedback on the fracture process; rupture
dynamics; frictional behavior of complex interfaces; modeling of
earthquake rupture through analytical, numerical and analogical
methods.

A special emphasis will be proposed on the physics of rupture in
rock. We are interested in (1) the monitoring at laboratory scale
using indirect methods like acoustic emission (passive) and wave
transmission techniques (active); (2) data from confined rock fracture
and friction experiments illuminating source parameters of single
crack events, acoustic signatures of the fracture process and damage
zone, as well as the energy balance of a propagating shear rupture;
(3) Numerical simulations (BEM, xFEM) of crack paths are welcome to
underpin experimental findings; (4) contributions dealing with the
upscaling of rupture identities from laboratory to earthquake
dimension.
