Information - SSS3 Reactive mineral surfaces in soil clay fractions - their role in pedology, ecology and technology (co-listed in VGP)
Event Information
The term 'soil clay' comprises all mineral particles in the soil that
are smaller than 2 micrometers. This definition includes (i)
phyllosilicates, (ii) pedogenic oxides and hydroxides, (iii) short range
order minerals such as allophane, (iv) long range order minerals such as imogolite, and finally (v) gel-like precipitates.
Because of their chemical and structural differences, these compounds also differ in their ability to attract and retain organic and inorganic compounds. Mineral surface reactivity has strong implications for biotic and abiotic processes ranging from heavy metal retention to carbon stabilization and the catalytic induced breakdown of organic pollutants. Process studies often focus on rates and products rather than on surfaces. Therefore, this symposium wants to promote the understanding of the role of the reactive mineral surface in soil biogeochemistry, ecology and technology.
