Information - HS40 Novel techniques for measuring rainfall micro- and macro-structure (co-listed in AS & NH)
Because precipitation constitutes the main source of water for the terrestrial hydrological processes, accurate and reliable measurement and prediction of its spatial and temporal distribution over a range of scales is an important goal for hydrology. This session will focus on recent technological advances in the measurement of the micro- and macro-structure of precipitation, ranging from novel types of in situ instruments such as precipitation gauges and disdrometers, essentially providing point precipitation measurements, to novel types of remote sensing equipment such as microwave links and radars, providing line, area, and volume measurements. Of particular emphasis will be quantitative studies of measurement error and implications for the design of measurement networks and for modelling precipitation fields. Studies pertaining to both liquid and solid precipitation measurement are encouraged.
Our aim is to bring together scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines to discuss the state of the science regarding theoretical and experimental aspects of the in situ and remotely sensed (ground-based and space-borne) measurement of precipitation. We particularly solicit contributions presenting novel ideas for the complementary usage of different precipitation measurement techniques, combining multiple sensors as a single observation system.
