  Information - GD3 The Earth's Mantle - Geodynamical and Geochemical Models for the Structure and Composition (co-sponsored by EAG)

Event Information
Over the past decade, significant efforts have been made to integrate geodynamical models, geophysical observations, results from mineral physics, and geochemical constraints into a self-consistent model of the Earth’s mantle. In this multidisciplinary session, we will debate our current views of thermal, chemical and dynamical models of the upper and lower mantle. Among the important questions and topics, we would like to emphasize the following: recent progress in numerical modeling of thermo-chemical convection; degree of mantle mixing and survival of possible mantle reservoirs; recent advances in the tomographic imaging of various mantle regions; implication of finer descriptions of the transition zone and the changes that occurs therein; effect of new results concerning the thermo-elastic and transport properties of upper and lower mantle materials; role of specific elements in global dynamics (hydrogen, iron, aluminum, …); and mapping of thermo-chemical lateral anomalies. We welcome contributions in geodynamics, geochemistry, mineral physics, and seismology that incorporate new constraints and apply new techniques in order to push the frontiers of our understanding of Earth’s mantle structure, composition and evolution.
