  Information - HS20 Technological potential for assessing soil erosion and sediment transport in ungauged river basins

Event Information
The IAHS Decade on Predictions in Ungauged Basins (PUB), 2003-2012, is aimed at increasing understanding of hydrological processes in such a way as to support predictions and forecasting in ungauged river basins. On the one hand it is of fundamental interest to develop our understanding of the physics of river basin response. On the other, as human pressure on land and water resources increasingly and detrimentally affects runoff and soil erosion, it becomes critically important to develop a science-based capability for assessing current and future environmental impacts. In many parts of the world, runoff and, even more so, erosion and sediment load are poorly monitored. Further, while assessment and prediction of sediment transport is challenging enough in well monitored catchments, it becomes extremely difficult in those large parts of the world where no proper monitoring system is present

This session provides a platform for presenting the current state-of-the-art, and possible future directions, in soil erosion, sediment transport and sediment yield prediction in ungauged basins. Papers and posters are invited that address issues related to new concepts in monitoring, mapping, modelling and predicting sediment transport and sediment yield in ungauged basins, including remote sensing, telemetry, new instrumentation, spatial scale dependency in response, and transfer of models and relationships from gauged basins.
