Information - HS5.3 Sediment dynamics during extreme events
Event Information
Significant erosion, sediment transport and deposition processes often occur during large and/or extreme events. Sediment dynamics at high flow intensities may be different from those at low flow close to transport initiation, but direct measurement of transport conditions at high flows are very difficult. Therefore a comprehensive analysis of large and extreme flood events may help to better understand sediment dynamics for these conditions. During such events there may also be a strong link with the geomorphologic conditions and sediment transport dynamics. Erosion, transportation and deposition of sediment can cause severe damage. Sediment transport processes are being increasingly recognized as important processes during extreme hydrologic events, particularly in mountain areas. We invite contributions on sediment transport and erosion processes related to large flood events in various environments, including the influence of and its effects on the geomorphology of the affected stream channels and catchments.
