Vegetation properties dominate hydrological processes through modification of rainfall interception, infiltration, evapotranspiration, surface runoff, and groundwater recharge. The water balance in turn has important controls on many of the recent changes in hydrologic response, including floods and droughts. The scientific community is becoming aware of the difficulties caused by the nonlinearity and complexity of the interactions between climate, soil and vegetation for understanding the dynamics of water balance. Investigation of the role of climate-soil-vegetation interactions in the dynamics of soil moisture variability is essential for the comprehension of possible climatic changes, as well as for the analysis of extreme hydrological events. The dynamics of these interactions is influenced also by the scale at which they are studied. The hydrologic and ecologic mechanisms and driving forces underlying climate-soil-vegetation dynamics and thus controlling the variability of hydrologic and ecologic processes are now at the core of the new sub-disciplines of ecohydrology and hydrometeorology, linking engineering and environmental geosciences, through the inter-linking of traditional disciplines such as hydraulics, hydrology, meteorology, geophysics, and ecology. Papers are solicited on any aspects dealing with dynamics of vegetation, soil vegetation interactions impinging on soil moisture and water balance variability at all time and space scales. Papers dealing with hydro-meteorological and catchment characteristics and indices capable of describing patterns of extremes under various climatic and physiographic conditions and different catchment scales are also welcome.
