Information - VGP20 MC-ICP-MS and the understanding of mantle structure

Event Information
The advent of a new generation of multi-collector plasma ionisation mass spectrometers has opened new frontiers in the isotopic tracing of mantle structure. Radiogenic isotopic systems have greatly benefited from the expansion of MC-ICP-MS, allowing a revival of Lu-Hf chronometry and an integrated Hf-Nd-Pb approach. Together with studies of the mantle Os, this has proven extremely powerful in constraining the lithospheric and asthenospheric evolution. Moreover, the isotopic compositions of elements such as B, Li, Mg, Fe and Cu can be now routinely analysed by MC-ICP-MS thus providing information on how recycled material is distributed in the present-day mantle. In this respect, stable isotope tracers can be used to test inferences from radiogenic isotope systems and add another dimension to modelling and prediction of the mechanisms of mantle convection. Although still at the frontier stage, texture-related in-situ measurements of isotopic tracers (both radiogenic and stable isotopes) by laser ablation MC-ICP-MS can provide new insights into deep and shallow mantle architecture and evolution. This session seeks to explore how the expansion of MC-ICP-MS is improving our understanding of the composition and structure of the mantle, of the nature and timing of processes operating within it and of their geodynamic consequences.
