Since the beginning of the 1990's a number of global tracer data sets have been collected, along with global CO2 data sets. These data sets are increasingly being used, frequently in multi-tracer studies, to gain new insight into ocean circulation, water mass transformation processes and rates, and uptake of CO2 by the ocean. This session is intended to review the progress in application of tracers to oceanographic problems on local, regional, and global scales, and to the question of the patterns and rates of CO2 uptake by the ocean. In addition, it will highlight new directions of tracer applications in oceanography and ocean carbon studies. We encourage contributions addressing the topics listed above using single- or multi-tracer analyses, as well as conceptual or numerical models on local to global scales with emphasis on studies that apply tracers to the problem of anthropogenic CO2 uptake.
