Information - VGP3 Mechanisms and thermo-fluid dynamics of magmatic processes and volcanic eruptions
Event Information
Volcanic eruptions involve complicated non-linear transformations of magma properties during ascent and deposition. To improve our understanding of this phenomenon, it is necessary to study microscopic processes as well as the general dynamics of magmatic systems including magma chambers, conduits and deposition on the Earth surface. In this session we wish to bring together numerical modelers, experimentalists and field volcanologists studying either (1) a specific physical or chemical process (e.g.: nucleation, crystallization or fragmentation of magma) or (2) more macroscopic phenomena such as: pyroclastic and conduit flows, lava dome extrusions and flows, volcanic plumes and magma chamber dynamics or (3) field observations that have not yet been explained by existing models. We particularly solicit contributions that couple the interpretation of data and/or observations with physical modelling.
