Information - HS14 Integrated water resources assessment (co-listed in SSS)
Event Information
At a global scale there is much discussion on the extent and severity of water scarcity. There are different ways of assessing water scarcity and the picture is quite different if one looks at water for people, water for agriculture, water for industrial needs or water for the environment. The appropriate assessment is often hindered by a lack of adequate understanding about the temporal and spatial variation of water quantity and quality. Equally important is that relevant ecological- and socio-economic constraints are often not an integrated part of the appraisal. Truly integrated water resource assessments should consider economic costs as well as social, environmental and resource costs.
It is important to acknowledge the importance of water for various functions (both social and ecological) in all phases of the hydrological cycle. Particularly the distinction between blue and green water is relevant in this regard. The role that virtual water trade can play to mitigate water scarcity is also important. The degree of water availability or water scarcity is very much scale-dependent and dependent on the required level of reliability.
The session invites visionary papers, assessment studies at different scales and modeling approaches and results. A requirement is that papers address water resources assessment in an integrated fashion. Authors wishing to present studies that concern developing countries are especially encouraged to submit an abstract.
