Information - SM5 Structure and composition from crust to core: Towards a European reference model

Event Information
Reference Earth models are constantly used and have a large imprint on many seismological activities, ranging from earthquake location and source studies to structural inferences. The need for a specific, broadly accepted, modern seismological reference is particularly strong for Europe, where the uppermost mantle structure is very complex on a small lateral scale. At larger depths, the problem of understanding the structure is of course a global one, and many key questions transcend beyond the European domain.

We welcome contributions which investigate the Earth's structure at all scales and at any depth. Ideally the session will cover work in global seismic tomography, the nature of mantle discontinuities, and results on upper mantle and crustal structure at regional and local scale. We also encourage papers dealing with the properties and the meaning of reference models, their specific use in seismological observatories, ways of evaluating their performance and strategies to optimally merge information from different data or different spatial scales.
