Information - HS3 Sustainable Catchment Management: Quantification of anthropogenic impacts on catchment hydrology and water quality (co-listed in BG)

Event Information
In recent years hydrological processes in river basins have increasingly been studied in order to quantify the possible impacts of changes in land use, land cover or soil surface conditions and urbanization on catchment processes, water quality and on extreme hydrological conditions (floods and droughts). The central aim of these investigations is the development of concepts for sustainable catchment management. Experimental catchment studies as well as the employment of hydrologic or eco-hydrologic models have been used achieve this goal.
Under the light of the European Framework Directive (WFD) it becomes even more important to make this knowledge available for future decision making. Therefore the session also aims at evaluating the available methodologies used during the early phase of the implementation of the WFD. Available methodologies used to characterise the difference sources (diffuse and punctual) of pollution, and to conduct a pressure and impact analysis are sought.
This session welcomes contributions on the following particular issues:
- Anthropogenic influence on water, erosion and pollutant fluxes on catchment scale including the identification of significant sources of point and diffuse pollution for groundwater and surface water including the impacts of urbanization on hydrologic properties of catchment
- Experimental catchment studies to analyse the impact of land use change or management practice on water quantity and quality
-•Catchment modelling or modelling of hydrologic processes under the influence of land use/land cover change or management practice
- Conservation strategies to reduce diffuse pollution of water bodies on catchments scale
- Compilation of land use change or management practice scenarios
- Parameterisation scenarios of land use change or management practice in modelling exercises
- Consideration of parameter uncertainty for of land use or management practice studies
- Modelling tools and sustainable catchment management strategies in order to achieve the goals of WFD
- Multi-disciplinary approaches towards sustainable catchment management
- Strategies how to transfer methods/results from small catchment experience to larger scales.
