Information - BG6.03 Ecosystems of the deep sea-floor and their geological drivers (co-listed in SSP, OS & CL)
Event Information
This session is aimed at improving our understanding of deep-seafloor ecosystems – probably the most poorly known ecosystems on Earth. In some cases these ecosystems are now under pressure as exploitation of the deep-sea floor expands. We need to understand them in the natural state before they are influenced by man. The session should bring together geologists, geochemists, biologists, physical oceanographers and socio-economists, who all have a contribution to make in understanding the ecosystems and influencing decision makers. Ecosystems include cold-water corals, canyon ecosystems, seamounts, cold seep ecosystems and anoxic environments as well as ecosystems on the open slopes between. This session is directly related to programmes such as the Census of Marine Life and the EU project HERMES but contributions are welcome from other projects and individuals.
