This session aims to stimulate discussions regarding the impact of rheological
models in tectonic modelling studies, the state of our knowledge of Earth
materials rheology, and how this knowledge can best be implemented in numerical
models. Many questions need addressing. For example, how can we bridge the
spatial and temporal scale differences between field observations, laboratory
measurements and tectonic models? Are crucial aspects of rheology still missing
from our models? To what extent can we use tectonic models and distributions of
seismicity to place constraints on Earth rheology?

We encourage contributions from modellers, experimentalists, structural
geologists and geophysicists concerned with rock rheology, extrapolation of
experimental data, choice of rheological laws, sensitivity of numerical and
analogue models to such laws, and the determination of rock behaviour from
studies of natural tectonites and from field measurements (e.g., post-seismic
surface displacements).
