The session will be devoted to mixing, diffusion and transport of tracers (contaminants, chemicals, organisms, temperature, moisture, ... either passive, or chemically, biologically or dynamically active) in geophysical flows (in atmosphere, ocean, or Earth's interior). The aim is to bring together contributions from theoreticians and experimentalists involved in geophysical model development, observations and data analysis, as well as from researchers in dynamical systems theory, stochastic modeling, and related fields, to stimulate cross-fertilization.
It is hoped that the session will cover topics including isentropic and isopycnal chaotic stirring, effective diffusivity, coherent structures and barriers to transport, the relationship of turbulent transport and mixing to Lagrangian chaos descriptions, the impact of mixing on chemical reactions and biological activity, fractal and multifractal measures, wavelet analysis, structure functions, Lyapunov exponents, multi-particle statistics, and the relation between Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions.
