Electron transfer processes control the fate and sequestration of organic matter in the subsurface, i.e. in soils, sediments and aquifers. They also determine the fate and mobility of redox sensitive major elements and trace elements, such as arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, which are of environmental interest. The past decade has seen dramatic progress on chemical and microbially mediated electron transfer processes and on the ways these processes are controlled by mineral surface characteristics, and thermodynamic and kinetic factors. Novel approaches using stable isotopes, reactive tracers, and in situ reactors have also changed our view of electron transfer processes in the subsurface. This interdisciplinary session seeks to examine this progress from the micro- to the watershed scale. We invite fundamental contributions that address electron shuttling processes, thermodynamic and kinetic constraints, and decoupling of electron transfer processes in space and time. Also we solicit applied case studies that illustrate the application of these concepts in soils, sediments, and aquifers.
