Human activities have promoted soil degradation processes at various scales. Therefore, the evaluation and monitoring of soil quality are current concerns and, consequently, adequate procedures are checked for by many soil scientists. The soil quality refers to the soil genetic stage, the use of the land, climatic conditions and the level of pollution. However, the selection of the set of techniques to evaluate soil genesis and soil degradation and to monitor soil rehabilitation is not finalised.
To update this session, we included didactical aspects on soil functions to exploit knowledge towards a broader audience.
In the last years, classical and modern soil biological parameters have been used as indicators of soil quality since they are sensitive to the development of young soils and regoliths and ready to detect disturbances in ecosystems. Classical techniques address species identification and physiology and soil biochemistry. In contrast, the modern techniques mainly refer to on molecular and isotopic signatures. Since biological characteristics are interrelated to some degree to physical and chemical soil properteries, the development of ‘networking tools’ to evaluate soil quality are particularly welcome.
