The Asian monsoon climate plays an important role in the social and economic development of a vast region in Asia, extending from India to China, from Indonesia to Mongolia. This area has experienced rapid economic growth through industrialization, increase in urbanization, and subsequent large changes in land use and land cover over the last decades. These intense changes in land use and in society have many direct and indirect effects on a variety of ecosystems, atmospheric composition, climate, and human health from the ecosystem scale, through local and regional to the global scale. This session invites presentations on all aspects of monsoon dynamics which have been affected by human activities in Monsoon Asia including observations, experimental and modeling studies. We particularly invite presentations of how local, regional and global environmental change have affected land-atmosphere interactions, aerosols, convections, biogeochemical cycles, hydrological cycle, soil moisture-precipitation interactions and feedbacks, and overall changes in monsoon system. The session will also include integrative approaches on interactions and feedbacks, linking measurements and modeling. The session is organized in collaboration with MAIRS, the Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study, and iLEAPS, core project of IGBP, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme.
