Information - OS8 The fate of the Arctic sea ice in changing climate: implication from observations and modeling (co-listed in CL, CR & NH)

Event Information
Recent shrinking of the sea ice cover is a major manifestation of the global climate change in the Arctic. The global climate models show the extension of shrinking up to disappear of ice in the summer to the end of 21s century. The consequences of such progression have many impacts on future of the Arctic environment, Arctic shipping and mining of oil and gas on the Arctic shelf. In this context it is important to know as far we can trust the model projections. The best way to know this is to compare the modeled and observed change of sea ice extent (SIE) during interval covered by reliable observations. This issue is the subject of many investigations during last few years.
The goal of session is to consider observed changes of sea ice in the Arctic up to 2007 including reliable data for earlier period especially starting in 1920s, to estimate the quality of the model simulations during period of observations and capability of models to project the future of sea ice in the Arctic.
