Information - VGP25 Natural stone in monuments - from diagnosis to conservation
Event Information
Natural stone decay is recognized as a severe threat of cultural heritage. Stone buildings and monuments form the cultural centres of many world urban areas. These areas have often become ‘centres’ of pollution. Correct diagnosis of stone weathering mechanisms and perfect knowledge of natural stone properties (mineralogical, petrographic, physical and chemical) make basis for a sound concept of stone conservation. The interdisciplinary approach to solve the problem requires co-operation of geologists, chemists, materials scientists, civil engineers, restorers, and architects. The session would like to strengthen the interactive knowledge of the problems, consequences and possible solutions of prevention of natural stone weathering.
