Information - CL26 Biogenic Opal and the Reconstruction of Paleonenvironmental Conditions of Land and Sea (co-listed in BG, OS & SSP)

Event Information
Opal sediments provide new perspectives for paleoenvironmental reconstructions especially on places, such as freshwater lakes and ocean areas (e.g. Southern Ocean), where there is a lack of carbonate sediments. There has been a recent surge of interest in using opal sediments for isotopic and trace element based reconstructions of nutrient utilization, productivity, and melt water input as well as for diatom or radiolarian species-based reconstructions of past sea ice coverage, temperature, salinity, and pH. This session aims to bring together a range of presentations covering the use of opal sediments for the reconstruction of climatic and environmental conditions from both, freshwater and marine systems, also discussing challenges and advantages of opal-based proxies. The session should promote interdisciplinary cooperation to enhance the integration of geochemical and (paleo)biological proxies needed to advance our understanding of climate driving processes.
