The THORPEX sessions will focus on the dynamics and predictability of high impact weather from one day ahead. The session will accept papers on a wide range of topics that include the following.
i) Theoretical, modelling and observational studies of the dynamical sequence of events that result in poorly predicted high impact weather events.
ii) Investigations into the dynamical and physical factors that limit the skill of current predictions.
iii) Data assimilation, modelling and targeted measurement strategies to improve the prediction of high impact events results from data denial experiments including major observational campaigns such as AMMA, MAP and ATREC and plans for TPARC the THORPEX Pacific Asian Regional Campaign.
iv) Global and Limited-Area Ensemble Prediction.
v) The development of the THORPEX/WCRP initiative, GEO Task CL_07_01, on "International Weather, Climate and Earth-system Science" which seeks to address the uncertainties associated with climate variability and change, and related societal impacts. This should cover the need for high-resolution seamless weather/climate global prediction systems and the design and implementation of a unified approach toward weather, climate, Earth system, and societal-economic research.
