Information - CL2 Monsoon climates - variability, changes and paleo-perspectives

Event Information
The monsoons represent one of the most prominent modes of climate variability in the low latitudes and directly affect life conditions and welfare of one third of the Earth's population. Amount, intensity and spatial extent of monsoon rainfall is subject to large variations on all time scales, which partly arise from circum global teleconnections for instance related to ENSO and Eurasian surface conditions. In addition, there is some indication that the monsoons may be highly sensitive to enhanced greenhouse-gas concentrations. The session is dedicated to the various monsoon climates around the globe, including the partly extra tropical North American and East Asian monsoons. The basic goal is to shed light on the various time scales of monsoon variability and their embedding in the global teleconnections, starting from the intraseasonal monsoon breaks and the relationship with the Madden-Julian Oscillation, continuing with the role of ENSO and the Tropical Biennial Oscillation and finally arriving at centennial, millennial to Milankovitch time scales as inferred from proxy data and palaeo-reconstructions. Monsoonal sensitivity to radiative forcing, land use changes, solar variability and volcanic eruptions is also of particular interest. Contributions about monsoon impacts on society, economy and food security are welcome as well.
