Information - OS10 Detection and Understanding of the Heat and Freshwater Budget Changes and Transports in the Northern Oceans (co-listed in CL)
Event Information
A number of studies conducted in recent years have revealed large changes in the climate system of the North. For this session we would like to invite presentations covering the various aspects of heat and fresh water budgets of the Northern Oceans, its changes (variability), associated transport patterns and local as well as remote interactions.
The sustained freshening in the Arctic and subpolar North Atlantic; transient freshening and cooling events with different magnitude and space-time scales; changes in water mass formation rates and mixing; impacts of winter convection in the Labrador Sea and other basins on the large scale variability; the warming of the Atlantic layer of the Arctic Ocean; the reversal in the freshening trend and recent increase in temperature and salinity in the Labrador and Irminger Seas; the apparent shrinking of the Arctic ice cover - these are just examples of such changes, which we cordially invite you to demonstrate and discuss. The timescales covered by the session range from interanual to multidecadal.
We would like to foster a discussion on the nature of the observed and modelled variability and the possible mechanisms involved, and are happy to accommodate all approaches to the topic including analyses of historic hydrographic and atmospheric data, modern observations; process studies; numerical modeling; remote sensing and new technologies.
