  Information - NP3.01 Scaling and Nonlinearity in the Hydrological Cycle (co-listed in HS)

Event Information
Most aspects of the hydrologic cycle, including precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, runoff production and groundwater flow, are characterized by marked irregularity and high non-linearity. The same is true for water-mediated interactions between land, the atmosphere and the biosphere. In many cases the nonlinear dynamics is the same at different scales and the observed variables (e.g. rainfall intensity, fluvial topography, subsurface flow) are themselves invariant under appropriate scaling transformations. Fractal and multifractal models can be used to represent this stochastic regularity through renormalization properties and scaling exponents, providing parsimonious representations of complex nonlinear phenomena.
This session is devoted to nonlinear and scaling approaches for modeling all elements of the water cycle as well as related interactions among the geo-, atmo-, and bio-spheres.
Particular emphasis will be given to
-The inference of scaling properties (spatial, temporal and dynamic scaling exponents);
-Physical processes underlying scale invariance;
-The limits of scaling regimes;
-Applications including prediction, regionalization, and small-scale disaggregation.

Both theoretical and operational contributions are sought.
