Information - CL13/CL29 EPICA ice cores and Quaternary Earth System Dynamics (co-listed in CR, OS & BG)

Event Information
The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) is a consortium of laboratories from 10 European nations, under the auspices of the European Science Foundation (ESF), and funded by the European Union (EU) and national organizations. EPICA is drilling two cores to bedrock, one at Concordia Station, Dome C (75º06'S, 123º21'E), the other at Kohnen Station in Dronning Maud Land (DML) (75º00'S, 00º04'E). The Dome C drilling aims to retrieve a record covering a time period that is as long as possible, while the DML drilling aims to retrieve a high resolution record of at least one complete glacial-interglacial cycle at a site facing the Atlantic Ocean. This session will allow EPICA and other scientists to present data on climate and environmental change from both cores and related topics. Currently the Dome C ice core covers already about 800 kyr (doubling the period for which ice core data are available) and with completion of the drilling this may be extended to about 900 kyr. Also for DML ice core data is already available covering the last app. 180 kyr and drilling will continue for another 300m.

The new EU contract, called EPICA-MIS (MIS stands for marine isotopic stages), will last for the next 3 years with the aim to complete de EPICA ice drilling operations and to produce a climatic record integrating ice core and marine sediment data. In this frame, we strongly also encourage presentations on marine sediment records that link to the ice core records and time periods.
