Information - GMPV16 Volcano Processes: Observation and Models (co-listed in NH)
Event Information
Volcano observation becomes increasingly more sophisticated. Classic parameters as temperature, acoustic signals and deformation are extended by e.g. geochemistry, electromagnetics, visual monitoring and environmental parameters. Almost all of them are driven toward increased precision and near real-time data transmission according to technical progress. In addition, laboratory studies under in-situ conditions are successfully performed and three dimensionality is tackled by tomographical methods in order to geometrically determine and understand magmatic transport processes of fluids and partial melts from the sources to the surface. All this provides voluminous new input for more consolidated models with respect to e.g. gaseous fluid-dynamical, brittle-mechanical or general conduit magma processes, under consideration of actual internal and external forces. This session aims to compile the state of the art in volcano observation and modelling, and to outline the directions toward new frontiers.
